Novak Djokovic’s wife Jelena dropped a one-word response as the tennis ace made a stylish landing in Argentina for Juan Martin del Potro’s farewell. The Serb presented the trophy at the Copa Libertadores final before the emotional exhibition match.
Djokovic concluded his 2024 season early at the Shanghai Masters after losing to World No.1 Jannik Sinner and is ready to play at the highest level next season as he ramps up the off-season activities. The 24-time Grand Slam champion was spotted at the Qatar F1 Grand Prix on Friday before landing in Argentina hours later.
Djokovic made a surprise appearance at the Copa Libertadores final in Monumental de Nunez Stadium, Buenos Aires, before the start of the final and was spotted carrying the shiny silver trophy. The 37-year-old later played former US Open Champion Juan Martin del Potro in his farewell match and lost the emotional encounter 6-4, 7-5.
The Serb donned a stylish black suit and white shirt paired with white sneakers during his appearance in the Monumental de Nunez Stadium and shared pictures from his outing on social media. Djokovic’s wife Jelena reacted to the post and wrote on Instagram:
“Amooooreeeee 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️.”
The couple have known each other since their high school days and began dating in 2004 before exchanging engagement rings in 2013. They tied the knot in 2014 shortly after Djokovic’s second Wimbledon championship win and have two kids – a son named Stefan and a daughter named Tara.
“I do not know a person who does not love Juan Martin del Potro” – Novak Djokovic pays emotional tribute to the retiring Argentine
Novak Djokovic was emotional after playing in the farewell match of former World No. 3 Juan Martin del Potro in Buenos Aires. The Serb hailed the 2009 US Open champion as a ‘great person and player’ and claimed the Argentine was an example for all tennis players.
“Like everyone here in this stadium, I am very emotional today. I am also grateful for being able to play with my friend, with a great person and a great player, as well as a great rival. It is a very special day for me too,” he said (as quoted by Eurosport).
“I do not know a person who does not love Juan Martin del Potro. Everyone loves him very much. I come from a country that has a culture with those values, that defines a person by how they behave and the professionalism they have, but it is always important to have respect and feel that life in the eyes, in the heart, in the soul,” Novak Djokovic added.
Del Potro’s career was largely marred by injuries and had last played competitively in 2022 before officially retiring on December 1. The 36-year-old was in tears during the farewell match and shared a long embrace with Djokovic at the end.
