Jannik Sinner Touches Down in Turin for ATP Finals As The Countdown Begins

World no. 1 Jannik Sinner is the first player to arrive in Turin ahead of the ATP Finals! The home favorite will lead the field at the ultimate event of the season, hoping to go a step further than 12 months ago and clinch the title in front of the partisan crowd. Jannik skipped the Paris Masters due to a virus and stayed in Monte Carlo for a couple of days before heading to Turin for the gathering of the world’s best eight players. Sinner is 65-6 this season, leading the Tour with seven titles and securing his first year-end no. 1 honor after building a massive advantage over his closest rivals.

Jannik’s results in 2024

The Italian scored two wins over Novak Djokovic in the closing stages of 2023. He reached the ATP Finals title clash and claimed the Davis Cup title for Italy, the first since 1976. Sinner maintained that boost and clinched his first Major title at the Australian Open this January. The young gun toppled the ten-time champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-final, facing no break points and defeating the legends after a rock-solid performance. Jannik battled for the title against Daniil Medvedev, dropping the opening two sets before raising his level and performing an ultimate comeback to lift the first Major trophy at 22. The Italian secured another title in Rotterdam and reached the Indian Wells semi-final, starting the season with a 16-0 streak before losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the desert. Sinner bounced back and claimed the Miami Masters title, building a massive advantage in the ATP Race.

Jannik lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Monte Carlo semi-final and withdrew from the Madrid Masters ahead of the quarter-final due to hip pain. The Italian bounced back at Roland Garros, reaching the semi-final and earning enough points to dethrone Novak Djokovic and become the 29th world no. 1. Sinner could not chase the title, though, building the advantage over Carlos Alcaraz two times before falling in a five-setter. Competing as world no. 1 for the first time, Jannik claimed his fourth title of the season in Halle, keeping his main rivals behind despite the Wimbledon quarter-final defeat. The Italian faced Daniil Medvedev and struggled physically. He gave everything but suffered a loss in five sets. Sinner skipped the Olympic Games due to illness, missing a chance to chase a medal. He bounced back in the upcoming weeks, conquering Cincinnati and heading to the US Open as the top favorite.

Jannik defeated seven rivals en route to his second Major crown at 23, defeating Taylor Fritz in the title clash and cementing the year-end no. 1 honor. The Italian fell in that epic Beijing Open final to Alcaraz in three hours and 21 minutes, missing his chances in the decider and suffering the first defeat in this year’s finals. He bounced back in Shanghai, ousting Novak Djokovic in the final and earning his third Masters 1000 title of the season. World no. 1 ousted Daniil Medvedev, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz at the Six Kings Slam event in Riyadh, taking home $6 million, the most significant prize money in tennis history. Jannik withdrew from the Paris Masters due to illness, taking a couple of days off the court and training in Monte Carlo ahead of the ATP Finals.

Jannik’s 2023 ATP Finals campaign

A year ago, Sinner reached the ATP Finals title match in front of the home crowd in Turin. Jannik kicked off the action with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Stefanos Tsitsipas. The home star dropped ten points in ten service games, facing no break points and keeping the pressure on the other side. He converted two of five break points, delivering a break in each set and moving over the top in an hour and 25 minutes. Sinner had to work much harder in the second match against Novak Djokovic. Two rivals pushed each other to the limits, and the home favorite prevailed 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 in three hours and nine minutes.

We saw six break points and three breaks of serve, with both players serving well on the fast indoor court. They stayed neck and neck in the decider, and Jannik stepped in and clinched the tie break in style, celebrating his first victory over world no. 1. Sinner completed the round-robin action with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 triumph over Holger Rune, moving into the semi-final and helping Djokovic join him. The Italian battled against Daniil Medvedev and delivered a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 win, making a fresh start in the decider and arranging the title clash against the six-time winner. Unlike their round-robin clash, Novak dominated the final and beat Jannik 6-3, 6-3, controlling the pace and ousting the young gun for his seventh ATP Finals title. World no. 1 will be the favorite in Turin this year, seeking the sixth notable title of the season in front of the home crowd.
