The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to have made a change on the defensive side of the football. Throughout their win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the team played Cam Sutton, not Beanie Bishop, as their cornerback in their nickel packages. Head coach Mike Tomlin was not asked about the change after the game, but it is possible that the Steelers switched to Sutton, knowing the pass-heavy script that the game would entail.
Sutton returned to the Steelers following the bye week. He had previously been playing much of his time as the dimebacker and safety, but this was the first game where he was played the nickel as much as he did. Bishop did come into the game in the team’s dime packages, but it is unknown what the roles will look like next wee, and that is with the expected return of Cory Trice.
Either way, the change is one of the small tweaks the Steelers have started to make defensively over the last few weeks. In recent weeks, the team moved more towards Elandon Roberts at linebacker over Payton Wilson.
The Steelers’ defense is talented but has been far from perfect, and they will try to find the right formula of schematic and personnel tweaks to maximize the group.
